Conrad Smith says that he has not looked at the Super 14 table since the Hurricanes flew out to South Africa for their three game trip in March.
If Smith does have a look he probably won't like it as the Hurricanes are placed in ninth place with 18 points after three wins, four losses and a draw.
Their next match is against the Brumbies in Canberra on Friday where the Brumbies win over 80 per cent of their matches.
The Hurricanes know that from now on they must win every match if they are to make the play offs.
"For a number of reasons we don't want to be in the position we are,"
"We realise we've put ourselves here." Smith told Sky Sports.
"We think we're a better team than where we are and it's up to us to right that.
"There's plenty of rugby still to go and plenty of teams for us to play so I think we can play some good footy and still get a lot out of the year."
After the Brumbies the Hurricanes Hurricanes travel to Dunedin to take on the Highlanders and then they have home matches against the Chiefs and Reds before crossing the Tasman to play the Waratahs in Sydney.
Taranaki-bound coach Colin Cooper who is in his last year with the Canes admits that it is do-or-die for his team from now on.
"We've just got to do everything that is best for the team and go and win on Friday night. There is no formula. We've just got to play our best and do that for five weeks," the coach said.
"It's really good that they know where they are and they won't be holding back for any other game."
"We can't let anything come in and distract us really. The simple fact is that we've got to win.
"We can't worry about other teams we've just got to worry about what we're doing.
"If we lose this one (against the Brumbies) it doesn't really matter about anyone else."
The Hurricanes might not have home advantage this weekend but they will go into the match knowing that last year they ripped the Brumbies apart 56-7 in Wellington at Westpac Stadium.
This year the Brumbies will be a different team with the likes of Matt Giteau and abrasive forwards Rocky Elsom and Justin Harrison.
"I think from the start of the year, with the players they had recruited in key positions, they were always going to be a strong side," said Smith.
"They've just gone about their business and I'm sure they are happy with where they are sitting.
"They will be a tough team to beat. They just get things done and they will count games at home that they look to win and I'm sure this week will be one of them.
"We've got a good fight on their hands."
