Hurricanes coach Colin Cooper has departed the Canes and left ruing what could have been after only reaching one final and five playoffs during his eight years in charge.

The Hurricanes' inconsistent nature was illustrated by Friday's 32-16 loss to the Waratahs which meant they finished a lowly eighth, rather than in the semifinals.

"I'm certainly really frustrated. I guess my tenure has been a frustrating time really and that's how it finished," Cooper told NZPA reporters.

"They never give up, that's the beauty of coaching this group."

"I've had eight years with them and really enjoyed my time with them." he said before departing for a stint as coach of Taranaki.

"They're courageous guys, things just didn't go our way (on Friday night)... I just couldn't believe the uncharacteristic mistakes we were making and all the missed tackles."

Cooper said he still has his sights set on coaching the All Blacks so was keen to remain in New Zealand.

"My goal has always been the All Blacks, that's why I coach, it's what drives me," he said.

"It's quite a lonely job, a tough job, and this level of rugby is very draining and tiring on you."
